Working in philanthropy, we often hear from people “the volunteers just aren’t great,” or “I wish I had better board members.” When faced with these gripes, we wonder:
- Have the volunteers been trained properly?
- Do they fully understand their role and responsibilities?
- Are they having fun?
We encourage nonprofit leaders to meet volunteers where they are, and engage them in an activity they are passionate about– regardless of their capacity and skillset.
THG is often involved with training and recruiting volunteers for governance and donor prospecting, leading peer review sessions to take donors through the Moves Management™️ process during capital or comprehensive campaigns. We find organizations have incredible volunteers, but they need to empower them with the right tools and training. Whether it’s a gourmet chef making meals for cultivation, or an individual participating in peer review sessions, everyone feels involved and appreciated when they do something as a group.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of our work is interacting with passionate volunteers on an organization’s board. Volunteer leadership is a vital resource for nonprofits.
