Recognizing October as Ethics Awareness Month

As a member firm of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), The Hodge Group stands with AFP members throughout the world to recognize October as Ethics Awareness Month. AFP members adhere to the AFP Code of Ethical Standards which outlines a set of values that drive those in philanthropy to commit to highest ethical standards. As non-profit organizations strive to meet their fundraising goals (whether those are part of an annual appeal or capital campaign), they must strive to raise money in a manner that is transparent, respectful, honest, and responsible.

Ethical fundraising not only includes compliance with legal standards, but it also encompasses an obligation to act in ways that foster trust and uphold positive relationships with all stakeholders. Below are a few principles to guide your fundraising efforts:

Transparency: Donors deserve to know where their money is going– clear communication about how funds will be used and the overall impact of donations is essential. Providing regular updates and reports builds trust and encourages ongoing support.

Respect for Donor Intent: Fundraisers should honor the intentions of their donors. If someone contributes to a specific project, their wishes should be respected. Misusing funds or redirecting them without consent undermines trust and can damage the organization’s reputation.

Accountability: Organizations must be accountable for their fundraising practices. This includes adhering to ethical standards set by professional organizations, conducting audits, and being open to scrutiny. By holding themselves accountable, organizations instill confidence in their supporters.

Inclusivity: Fundraising must embrace diversity and inclusion. This means ensuring fundraising efforts do not deliberately marginalize certain groups. Engaging with and listening to the communities served can lead to more effective and respectful fundraising practices.

Technology’s Role: Since everything can be done online, technology plays a crucial role in fundraising. When utilizing online platforms organizations must prioritize data security, respect donor privacy, and be transparent about how personal information is used.

In a world where stakeholder trust is essential, adhering to these principles can build trust and long-term relationships with stakeholders and the communities served.

This October, THG re-affirms our commitment to our respective clients, their scopes of work, and communities-at-large that we will live and serve. Contact us to learn more.
